Practical AI education delivered directly to small business owners in Karratha, Western Australia
Overview
Practical AI education delivered directly to small business owners in Karratha, Western Australia. The 'Unlocking AI for Your Business' workshop brought approximately 30 Pilbara business owners together for a three-hour hands-on session designed to bridge the gap between emerging AI tools and the regional businesses that stand to benefit most from them. Delivered in partnership with Business Foundations and the Karratha & Districts Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KDCCI), the workshop formed part of a broader effort to bring meaningful digital capability-building directly to regional WA.
The Challenge
Small business owners in regional Australia often face a gap when it comes to adopting new technology. The information is out there, but it's frequently too technical, too abstract, or simply not delivered where it's needed most. For business owners in Karratha and the surrounding Pilbara region, that distance — both geographic and digital — can mean falling behind on tools that could genuinely transform how they work. The KDCCI, supported by Business Foundations, wanted to change that. The goal was to bring practical, no-nonsense AI education directly to their members in a format that felt accessible, relevant, and immediately useful.
The Discovery
The 'Unlocking AI for Your Business' workshop was designed as a hands-on, three-hour session — not a lecture. Approximately 30 small business owners from across the Karratha region attended, each with their own devices, their own businesses, and their own questions about where AI fits in. The session covered how to practically apply AI tools across common business functions — from drafting communications and marketing content, to streamlining operations and saving time on everyday tasks. The emphasis throughout was on simplicity: real tools, real use cases, real results. Rather than overwhelming participants with theory or hype, the workshop focused on building confidence. Attendees left with skills they could apply the next day.
The Solution
The response from participants was strongly positive. Business owners who arrived uncertain about AI left with a clearer understanding of where it could add genuine value in their operations — and the confidence to start using it straight away. The workshop demonstrated that AI education doesn't have to be complicated or city-centric. With the right approach, small business owners anywhere in WA can get up to speed quickly and put these tools to work. The partnership with Business Foundations and the KDCCI also highlighted the value of local business organisations in driving this kind of practical capability-building for their members.
